Why the Celtics Shouldn't Make a Trade for a Superstar Right Now

With the trade deadline approaching quickly, the Celtics have a lot of buzz surrounding them. Will they deal their coveted Brooklyn pick, which will undoubtedly be a top 3 pick in this upcoming loaded draft? Will they trade their core of young players in exchange for a potential or definite superstar? Every year Celtics' fans hear the same thing around the trade deadline, and nothing ever happens. Jimmy Butler and Paul George are the two big names being thrown around in the rumor mill as of late, but here's why the Celtics shouldn't bother trying to make a trade for either superstar if the opportunity comes.

The Celtics have been on an absolute tear as of late. The team is finally starting to come together, even though key players have missed an extended period of time or just a few games here and there. You can tell that the team's chemistry is sky high and their now just getting used to playing with each other. The Celtics have crept their way to the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference, with the Cleveland Cavaliers not too far ahead of them. Even with the injury of Avery Bradley, arguably the C's second best player, and Al Horford and Jae Crowder missing a few games here and there, the Celtics are finally starting to make some noise across the league. Beating teams such as the Rockets, Raptors, Bucks, Clippers, and the Trailblazers being shorthanded shows a lot about this team. Down 17 at one point to the Blazers the other night, the Crowder and Bradley-less Celtics came back to secure the away victory. This team fights till the very end and plays with more heart than their opponents. Even with critical injuries and absences from their best players, the Celtics are streaking and have no signs of slowing down.

If the Celtics somehow pull off a trade for a superstar, which I actually believe they could, they'd have to give up key players that would assist the team in a potential playoff run. Let's say the Celtics make a trade for Jimmy Butler, hypothetically. The Bulls would want to receive no less than Jae Crowder, Avery Bradley, some more young players, and most if not all our valuable picks, including this year's Nets pick. That's two of our starters and our future right there for one player and then some. That's not in any way taking away from Butler's value because he is an incredible player and it would take a lot for any team to pry him away from Chicago, but now is not the time for the Celtics to do that.

If the Celtics do want to make a trade, trade for a big man who can rebound and defend at a cheap cost. Fill the team's needs right now, don't blow up the team and ruin its chemistry a few months before a playoff run. If the Celtics are willing to make a trade for a superstar, wait until draft night. It has been proven in the past that players who aren't usually available at the trade deadline are made available on draft night for the right cost. Jimmy Butler is an example. He didn't end up being traded, but was damn close to on draft night last year, whether to the Celtics or Timberwolves. Teams could change their minds and want to trade up for a guy they believe they can build around. That Nets' pick will be treasured come draft night, especially if it becomes the first overall pick. That pick alone will be able to start up any trade talks for a lot of players that aren't available for trade right now.

I like where the Celtics are right now, and once everybody is fully healthy come playoff time, there's no reason to say they aren't a dark horse for not only for winning the East but the championship as well. I really do believe the Celtics can pull off a huge trade at the deadline, but I'm not too sure if they need to at this exact moment. Trader Danny knows what he's doing, so I'm sure whatever happens will be good for the team.
